Aerodynamics

Why is the roof the worst place on a car to carry a box?

The roof meets the fastest, cleanest air the car passes through. A roof box climbs into it, adds frontal area and tows a turbulent wake the whole trip. SKiiBOX sits on the tow hitch instead — inside the wake the car already leaves behind.

Does a tow-hitch box increase the car's frontal area?

No. SKiiBOX sits behind the tailgate, within the silhouette the car already presents to the air. A roof box sits above the roofline and adds to it.

Which adds more drag, a roof box or SKiiBOX?

The roof box. Aerodynamic drag grows with frontal area and turbulence — a roof box adds both, and the cost grows with speed. SKiiBOX adds neither.
